This is the story of a Saree Blouse.
History speaks volumes, and the saree blouse tells quite a tale. Originating around the 4th Century AD, the blouse began as a practical response to the harsh peninsular climate. Back then, women could freely decide whether to cover their chests, a reflection of societal norms. Until then, the choli (also known as KANCHOLIKA) was a piece of fabric, hung on the chest with a slit for the neck to pass through. Tying it up was an option and personally I think it was a practical decision, nothing more.
Enter the Kushan period around 100 CE, and the game changed. The stanpatta, a simple breastband, emerged to protect women from nomadic wandering eyes. Over the centuries, this evolved into the beautifully designed, form-fitted garment we know today as a BODICE (Saree BLOUSE in our country), influenced by various cultures along the way.
Next time you order a blouse, celebrate this remarkable piece of clothing and the artisans who create it. Let's appreciate its rich heritage, because focusing only on the 'fit' diminishes both the craftsmanship and its historical significance.
"Life is too short to nitpick on clothes."
